Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the matrix of opportunities and structural challenges within the international trade of Indonesian handicraft products in the Japanese market throughout 2025. The research adopts a qualitative-descriptive approach utilizing a library research design based on authoritative secondary data. The datasets were extracted from official publications of the Central Bureau of Statistics, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Trade, global economic institutions, and peer-reviewed scientific journals published between 2022 and 2026. Data analysis was executed utilizing an interactive model consisting of data collection, condensation, data display, and conclusion formulation. The empirical findings indicate that Japan persists as a highly potential destination market, driven by ascending consumer preferences for handmade, eco-friendly products embedded with profound cultural narratives. Indonesia possesses distinct comparative advantages, including the abundance of natural raw materials, rich cultural diversity, and artisan craftsmanship that vertically enhance product value. Nevertheless, export competitiveness is constrained by several determinant hurdles, such as Japan's rigid quality standard compliance, intense rivalry from competing exporting nations, high logistical cost burdens, and the persistent demand for continuous design innovation. Consequently, optimizing product quality management, accelerating market-driven innovations, leveraging digital marketing ecosystems, and fostering strategic collaborations between government bodies and creative entrepreneurs represent crucial strategies to enhance the competitive capability of Indonesian handicrafts in Japan. The insights from this research are expected to serve as a strategic reference for formulating export development policies within the national creative industry sector.
